Mountain Music: Posuposu Otani’s Signature Sound. A Unique Blend of Traditional Throat Singing, Playful Lyrics, Open-Tuned Guitar, and Kohkin...
The mysterious throat singer and songwriter known for his unique fusion of beautiful open-tuned guitar and the Kohkin (Jew’s Harp), releases his first physical album, Posuposu Otani. The album explores rich harmonics, fluid rhythms, and a focus on overtones and timbre, evoking moods reminiscent of Impressionist painters.
The album was introduced to the London-based label 33-33 by Posuposu Otani’s friend and fellow Yamanashi resident FujIIIIIIIIIIIIta, the renowned experimental musician with close ties to the label.
Born in 1972 and raised in Kamakura, Japan, Posuposu Otani’s musical journey began at age 20 with a passion for punk music, leading him to experiment with home recordings on a 4-track tape deck. His diverse experiences, including time spent in San Francisco’s skateboarding scene and travels through India and the Republic of Sakha to study the Kohkin, have profoundly influenced his sound.
Since 2006, he has been a prominent figure in the Tokyo and Yokohama underground music scenes, closely associated with the legendary experimental record label Kouenji Enban. In 2017, he relocated to the mountainous regions of Kanagawa to immerse himself in "mountain-music and mountain life," further shaping his artistic vision.
Posuposu Otani’s lyrics often reflect his deep connection to the natural world and the human experience, addressing themes of freedom, nature, and self-discovery. Songs like Finding Fungus and About Freedom highlight his focus on the organic world and its parallels to the inner human journey.
Posuposu Otani's full album will be available for streaming and purchase on Bandcamp and other major music platforms on April 25th, 2025.
